Happy National Aboriginal Day!

6/21/2016

Fierté Simcoe Pride wishes you a Happy ‪‎National Aboriginal Day‬! Today, and every day, let’s acknowledge and celebrate all the ‪Indigenous‬ communities of Turtle Island. It’s important that we not only celebrate the beauty and wisdom of these communities, but also stand in solidarity with them and work with them as allies.

Indigenous ‪LGBT‬ and ‪‎Two‬-Spirit individuals are impacted by the effects of colonialism on a day to day basis, so it is important that we work to include them in ‪‎Pride‬.

We celebrate the lives and contributions of Indigenous people and we will continue to work with them to make our County a more safe and inclusive place.

Statement from the President

June 13, 2016

The Board, Volunteers and Members of Fierté Simcoe Pride join the rest of the world in the condemnation of the appalling act of terrorism in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning, June 12, 2016.

To the families and friends of the victims, those injured in the events and all affected by the events, you are in our thoughts. This horrific act of violence devastates the local community of Orlando.

To the thousands who are sending messages of support for the LGBT community of Orlando, thank you. We praise the leadership of President Obama, Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and others who have issued public statements in support of the LGBT community and rebuking this act of terrorism.

We stand with the LGBT communities of Kiev (Ukraine), Nanaimo (BC, Canada), Washington (D.C., USA), Philadelphia (PA, USA), Los Angeles (CA, USA), Key West (FL, USA), Long Island (NY, USA), Milwaukee (WI, USA) and all others who marched and celebrated in Pride Parades and Festivals yesterday. We thank the police for increased presence at these events to ensure the safety of participants and in detaining an armed man in Los Angeles with the intent to do more harm.

We are disgusted by the public words of many community members throughout the world who are speaking through discrimination in support or justification of this tragedy, including Lieutenant Governor of Texas, Dan Patrick.

Many have been driven to promote Islamophobia from this event. Islamophobia is discrimination and has no place in ending violence against LGBT communities or in ending global terrorism. We applaud events such as the 13th Annual Peace Iftar on June 19, hosted by El-Tawhid Juma Circle (Unity Mosque) lead by founder El-Farouk Khaki. Inclusive events such as the Peace Iftar create safe spaces for LGBT Muslims and their allies.

This was the largest mass shooting of the 21st century in the USA, and the second largest in the history of the United States of America (the largest being the massacre at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890). These violent acts are rooted in discrimination, fear and oppression.

Everyday acts of violence against LGBT people happen around the world, in people’s homes, on the streets, in the workplace and in schools. Acts of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia must stop and everyone must take up the responsibility of creating safe spaces for LGBT community. The events on Sunday morning are a reminder of how difficult this task is and how important it is to accomplish. We stand with the world in solidarity for LGBT equality, equity and safety.

In the words of the Co-Chairs of InterPride: “We cannot allow the threat of violence to silence us. When possible, we must work even more closely with our Police Departments and security companies to help alleviate public safety concerns. We will work together to ensure that the commitment to Pride is not overshadowed by fear. Pride cannot be silenced. We, as pride organizers are its standard bearers.”

In response to this tragedy and to provide support to local community members of Simcoe County, there will be two candlelight vigils held. Barrie Pride will hold a vigil on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 7:30 PM at City Hall in Barrie, Ontario. Fierté Simcoe Pride will hold a vigil on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 8:00 PM at the Neezhoday Park in Midland, Ontario.

In Solidarity, Unity and Community,

Déclaration du president
13 juin 2016

J. Andrew Baker
Président
Fierté Simcoe Pride

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TRANS PRIDE MARCH
SIMCOE COUNTY, ON —  June 10, 2016 — Fierté Simcoe Pride (FSP) announced today that it will host the first Trans Pride March to ever be held in Simcoe County. The Trans Pride March will be held on Thursday, August 4 starting at Tudhope Park at around 6:30 PM and travelling by foot to Lake Couchiching Park on the paved trail stretching across the waterfront. The March seeks to provide a place for trans identified people to rally, stand up and come together in solidarity. All trans-identified people, their friends, families, and allies are welcome to march.

In 2012, Ontario helped solidified Trans rights through Toby’s Act by adding gender identity and gender expression to the Provincial Human Rights Code. Now, in 2016, the Federal government has re-introduced legislation in the form on Bill C-16 to add similar protections in the Canadian Human Rights Act as well as to protect under the Criminal Code. This march and other similar demonstrations help to spread awareness at a local level and speak out in support of recognizing and protecting Trans individuals.

Fierté Simcoe Pride has set up a Trans March Committee to help organize and promote the march. “This march will raise awareness, it’s about shedding light on the Trans community in a meaningful way,” said Keegan Hobson, Co-Chair of the March Committee, “this march will let Trans people know that they are not alone and that we’re here for them.” Community members interested in join the committee are welcome to contact the Co-Chair to help.

The Trans Pride March will be a part of a series of events taking place during the fifth annual Fierté Simcoe Pride, which starts on July 28 and ends on August 6. The theme that specially marks the festivities is “Celebrate:” Organizers are expecting more municipalities to be involved this year, adding to the number of flag raisings and proclamations, and have a number of new additions to the festival including a Pride Guide. The festivities will end with the second annual Simcoe County LGBT Community Awards Gala, for which nominations are open until June 17.
