PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TRANS PRIDE MARCH SIMCOE COUNTY, ON — June 10, 2016 — Fierté Simcoe Pride (FSP) announced today that it will host the first Trans Pride March to ever be held in Simcoe County. The Trans Pride March will be held on Thursday, August 4 starting at Tudhope Park at around 6:30 PM and travelling by foot to Lake Couchiching Park on the paved trail stretching across the waterfront. The March seeks to provide a place for trans identified people to rally, stand up and come together in solidarity. All trans-identified people, their friends, families, and allies are welcome to march. In 2012, Ontario helped solidified Trans rights through Toby’s Act by adding gender identity and gender expression to the Provincial Human Rights Code. Now, in 2016, the Federal government has re-introduced legislation in the form on Bill C-16 to add similar protections in the Canadian Human Rights Act as well as to protect under the Criminal Code. This march and other similar demonstrations help to spread awareness at a local level and speak out in support of recognizing and protecting Trans individuals. Fierté Simcoe Pride has set up a Trans March Committee to help organize and promote the march. “This march will raise awareness, it’s about shedding light on the Trans community in a meaningful way,” said Keegan Hobson, Co-Chair of the March Committee, “this march will let Trans people know that they are not alone and that we’re here for them.” Community members interested in join the committee are welcome to contact the Co-Chair to help. The Trans Pride March will be a part of a series of events taking place during the fifth annual Fierté Simcoe Pride, which starts on July 28 and ends on August 6. The theme that specially marks the festivities is “Celebrate:” Organizers are expecting more municipalities to be involved this year, adding to the number of flag raisings and proclamations, and have a number of new additions to the festival including a Pride Guide. The festivities will end with the second annual Simcoe County LGBT Community Awards Gala, for which nominations are open until June 17.
